Putt Break requires an iPhone with a LiDAR sensor: an iPhone 12 Pro / Pro Max or newer Pro model.

It will not work on non-Pro iPhones or older devices because they lack the LiDAR sensor needed for ground measurement.

Under good conditions—overcast or shaded, smooth turf, and a steady phone—readings are typically accurate to within ±0.3% slope. In challenging conditions such as direct midday sun, accuracy may drop to ±0.5–1%.

Treat readings as directional truth: reliable for “this green slopes about 2% right,” rather than a guarantee that it is precisely 1.7% instead of 2.1%. Always cross-check with your eyes.

Three common causes:

• Direct bright sunlight can reduce LiDAR accuracy. Shade the phone with your body or cap.
• Too much movement prevents the measurement from stabilizing. Hold steady for one or two seconds.
• The surface is too close or far away. LiDAR works best between roughly 0.5m and 2m.

If the dots never turn green even in shade, the reading is uncertain and should not be trusted.

Photos access may be turned off. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Putt Break, then select Add Photos Only.

If Putt Break is missing from the list, reinstall the app to trigger a fresh permission request when you first capture a reading.

No. Putt Break is intended for practice rounds and learning. Rule 4.3a of the Rules of Golf prohibits electronic devices that measure slope or other conditions affecting play during a stipulated round.

Always check the rules for your competition and club.

The F reticle is the far point used for measuring uphill or downhill slope. It marks the hole's direction relative to your stance.

Touch and hold the reticle—or close to it—then slide up or down. It remains on the centerline, and Putt Break remembers its new position.

After a confident slope reading, tap 2 · Distance and aim toward the hole. Putt Break shows horizontal distance in meters or feet.

It is most accurate within about 5 metres, where LiDAR measures directly. Accuracy gradually decreases beyond that range, up to the 30-metre limit.

Yes. Change it any time under Settings → Distance unit.

Narrow stance places the left and right reticles about 30cm apart. It is more local but less precise on subtle slopes.

Wide stance spreads them about 60cm apart. The longer baseline generally produces a more reliable number for subtle contours.

Real-time AR and LiDAR are power intensive. Close the app between greens, reduce screen brightness when practical, and keep your phone out of direct sun while stowed.

Putt Break is a measurement tool, not an aiming system. It cannot know your putter speed, green speed, grain direction, or stroke tendencies.

It tells you the slope; you combine that measurement with your own feel and experience.

Technically yes, but reflective floors and very dark surfaces can confuse LiDAR. A carpeted room works reasonably well for testing on known-flat and sloped surfaces.
