Common questions

Will Putt Break work on my iPhone?

Putt Break requires an iPhone with a LiDAR sensor. That means:

It will not work on non-Pro iPhones (iPhone 14, 15, 16, etc.) or older devices, since they lack the LiDAR sensor required for accurate ground measurement.

How accurate are the readings?

Under good conditions (overcast or shaded, smooth turf, phone held steady), readings are typically accurate to within ±0.3% slope. In challenging conditions like direct midday sun on light-colored grass, accuracy may drop to ±0.5–1%.

Treat readings as directional truth — reliable for "this green slopes 2% to the right," less reliable for "this green slopes 1.7% versus 2.1%." Always cross-check against your own eyes.

Why does the confidence bar stay yellow or orange?

Three common causes:

If the confidence dots never turn green even in shade, your reading is genuinely uncertain and shouldn't be trusted.

The shutter button says "Save failed — check Photos permission."

Photos access is turned off. To fix:

  1. Open the iPhone Settings app
  2. Privacy & Security → Photos
  3. Find Putt Break in the list
  4. Set it to Add Photos Only

If Putt Break doesn't appear in that list at all, the permission dialog never fired. Delete the app and reinstall — the permission will be requested fresh on first capture.

Can I use Putt Break in a tournament?

No. Putt Break is intended for practice rounds and learning only. Rule 4.3a of the Rules of Golf prohibits electronic devices that measure slope or other conditions affecting play during a stipulated round.

Always check your specific competition's rules. Some clubs ban these tools even in casual rounds.

What does the "F" reticle do, and how do I drag it?

The F reticle is the far point for measuring uphill/downhill slope. It marks "where the hole is" relative to your stance. The app measures elevation change between the midpoint of your L/R reticles and the F reticle's position.

To drag it: touch and hold the F reticle (or anywhere within about 60 pixels of it), then slide your finger up or down. The reticle stays on the centerline. Release to save its new position — Putt Break remembers it for next time.

What's the difference between narrow and wide stance?

Narrow stance places the L and R reticles about 30 cm apart — toe-to-toe distance. More local, less precise on subtle slopes.

Wide stance spreads them about 60 cm apart — feet-shoulder-width. Better for measuring subtle slopes (the longer baseline reduces noise) but covers more ground than your immediate stance.

For most reads on a flat-ish green, wide stance gives you a slightly more reliable number.

The app drains my battery during a round.

Real-time AR with LiDAR is power-hungry. To extend battery life:

Why doesn't the app tell me where to aim?

Putt Break is a measurement tool, not an aiming system. To predict where the ball will end up, the app would need to know your putter speed, the green's stimpmeter rating, the grain direction, your stroke tendencies — none of which it can measure.

The app honestly tells you the slope. You translate that into a putt using your own feel and experience. That's by design.

Does Putt Break work indoors?

Technically yes, but the readings are mostly meaningless. LiDAR struggles with reflective floors (polished hardwood, tile, glass) and very dark surfaces. For testing the app, carpeted rooms work reasonably well — try a slope reading on a known-flat carpet vs. a doorstep ramp to calibrate your expectations.
